Monica Townsend had a plan as she led her girls track and field team into action in a key dual meet against a fast Milpitas team last week.
"Our strategy was to sweep all the distance events and compete well in the sprints and field events, as they are very strong in the sprints and OK in the field, like us," said Townsend. "It worked."
Los Gatos went one-two-three in the 800 meters, the 1,600 and the 3,200, and it sparked the Wildcats to a 70-56 victory over the Trojans in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The win helped the Cats improve to 3-0 in the dual meet season as they prepare to host a tough Monta Vista squad on March 29, 3:15 p.m.
Kaela Townsend was the key figure in making the strategy pay off for her coach, and mother, in the meet against the Trojans. The talented sophomore raced to wins in the 1,600 and the 3,200, leading Gatos sweeps in each event.
Townsend won the 1,600 in 5:29.9 with Erin Fabris second and Ariana Nicewonger third, and the super soph also won the 3,200 in 11:40.0 with Paige Knudsen second and Nicewonger third.
Sophomore Callie Mulgannon was a winner in the 800 in 2:28 with Fabris second and teammates Marlana Shile and Kelly Garton tying for third.
Christine Reed joined Townsend as a double winner for the Wildcats. Reed took the 100 hurdles in 16.8 and she was first in the 300 hurdles in 50.9 with Christine Scales third. Reed also teamed with Sammi Moser, Mary Gonzales and Erickson for a win in the 4x100 relay in 50.6.
Erickson was a winner in the 400 in 59.6 with Moser second, and Scales was first in the high jump at 5-0.
Lauren Granadino was tops in the long jump at 14-6.5 and she added a second in the triple jump at 31-5.25.
Gonzales added a third in the 100, Moser was third in the 200 and Nikki Zeiter was third in the shot put.
Boys run past Milpitas
The Los Gatos boys, meanwhile, won all but three individual events and a relay as they rolled past Milpitas 87-40 in the De Anza Division dual meet. The win helped the Cats improve to 3-0 in the division.
Senior Don Gaspar, the Central Coast Section champion in the 400 last spring, won a pair of events to lead the Wildcats to the team win over the Trojans. Gaspar ran 49.37 to win his specialty, the 400, and he also took the 200 in 22.26.
Junior Matthew Petrillo, the CCS cross country champion last fall, raced to a win in the 800 in 2:04.33, and junior Bobby Shawhan won the 3,200 in 10:47. Sophomore Michael Johnson was tops in the 1,600 in 4:42.
Sophomore Colin Quirke and junior Randall Horn teamed up to win the weight events for Gatos. Quirke heaved the shot put 47-11 for a first and Horn whirled the discus 162-5 for a win.
Sophomore Kevin Rutledge, who set a school freshman record in the high jump at 6-4 last season, soared 6-2 to win the event against Milpitas.
Frosh-Soph Classic
The top freshman and sophomore track and field athletes in the CCS will be on the track at Los Gatos on Friday night for the annual Frosh-Soph Classic.
"This is always a great meet," said Townsend. "The best freshmen and sophomores in CCS compete head-to-head."
Track events will runs from 4 to 9 p.m. with field events going from 4 to 7 p.m.
