Shirley H. Northcutt

Shirley Haack Northcutt, 72, formerly of Los Gatos, died Feb. 26.

Northcutt was born in 1933 to Carl and Mable Haack in Kansas City, Mo. She graduated from Los Gatos High School in 1951. She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Los Gatos and a volunteer for Good Samaritan Hospital. Later she moved to Newberg, Ore. Northcutt was a homemaker, and for a time owned Newberg Printing.

Her husband, Bob Northcutt, died previously. She is survived by her sons, Michael, Jeff, Rick, Ron, Lennie and Greg Northcutt; her daughters, Stacy Gardner and Kris Mitchell; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Donations can be made in her name to the Newberg Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services, c/o Attrell's Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Orrin Blattner

Orrin James "Fess" Blattner of Saratoga, 88, died Feb. 23 of heart failure.

Blattner received his bachelor's and master's degrees from San José State University. He bought his home in Saratoga in 1954, where he lived for 52 years.

Proficient on more than 20 instruments, Blattner taught music at Los Gatos High School from 1944 to 1977, and arranged many works. He was a member of the San Jose Symphony, both as a trombone player and as the assistant conductor. He was also president of the San Jose Musicians Union Local 153 from 1959 to 1987. He was a bandleader all throughout his adult life, including the Gem City Jazz Band in the Bay Area and the Colorado River Jazz Patrol in Arizona.

Blattner is survived by his son, Frank Blattner of Boulder Creek; his daughters, Annette O'Brion of San Jose, Paulette May of San Jose and Jeanette Turkus of Monte Sereno; his wife, Marian Jacobsen; his first wife, Agnes Kelly; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held on March 1 in San Jose.
